Tripura, February 23, 2025: Garia Puja is the biggest and most historically significant festival among the Indigenous communities of Tripura. The festival is celebrated for seven days every year.
Among the various celebrations, the most grand one is performed by the Jamatia Hoda. This traditional festival marks the beginning of the new year in the month of Baishakh.
This year, major fairs will be organized in two locations in Tripura one in Pitra Village, Killa, and another in Sarbong, Amarpur, also known by its Indigenous name, Swkchuima.
The two celebrations represent two symbolic figures Biya Gwnang Garia, meaning “Younger Brother Garia,” and Biya kwrwi Baba Garia, meaning “Big Brother Garia.”
Every year, the Tripura State Government declares a two-day holiday for the last Puja. The first day of the seven-day-long festival is called Buisu, and the final day is known as Sena.
Today, to further enhance and strengthen this historic festival, CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia of the TTAADC government has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh.
After discussions with Jamatia Hoda’s Hoda Okra and Panchai, the CEM, even after providing ₹5 lakh, has separately promised to undertake temporary road maintenance, the construction of a temporary footbridge, and the development of bathing steps.
The ₹5 lakh will be distributed equally, with ₹2.5 lakh allocated to each location. CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia personally visited both sites today.
Additionally, MLA Pathan Lal Jamatia and MDC Sadhaghar Kalai have also extended their support for the Amarpur Sarbong fairs.
The fair will take place on April 13, while the puja will begin on April 14. This grand event will bring together people from all communities across Tripura to celebrate this historic festival.
