After assuming office as the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Kumar stated in his message that voting is the first step towards nation-building, and every citizen of India should become a voter.
SHABD, Delhi Air, February 19: Gyanesh Kumar today took charge as the new Chief Election Commissioner at the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi. He has succeeded Rajiv Kumar in this position. After assuming office, Mr. Kumar emphasized that voting is the first step towards nation-building and that every Indian citizen must become a voter.

He urged those who have completed 18 years of age to always participate in elections. He assured that, in accordance with the Indian Constitution, electoral laws, rules, and ongoing directives, the Election Commission has always stood by the voters and will continue to do so.
Before this, Mr. Kumar had been serving as the Election Commissioner since March 15, 2024. During his tenure as Election Commissioner, elections were conducted for the 18th Lok Sabha and the legislative assemblies of Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi.
A 1988 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, Gyanesh Kumar has experience working in both the central and state governments. He has also served as Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Cooperation.
