The state of Tripura joined the rest of the world in observing International Day of Persons with Disabilities today. The day was celebrated in Sepahijala, Khowai, and West Tripura districts. The events, which were organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, included some programs, awards and sport competitions and were centered on inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
Celebration in Sepahijala District
Supriya Das Dutta, the Chairperson of the Sepahijala Zilla Parishad, officially started the ceremony held at Leeladevi Memorial Hall in Charilam in favour of the physically challenged. She emphasized the need for harnessing the skills of the physically challenged saying, “They are an important section of society and their skills should be not only utilized, but also encouraged.” Charilam BAC Chairman Jaklu Debbarma presided at the event.
10 students who obtained high marks in their Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations were rewarded with cash prizes. In addition, three clubs were commended and awarded cash prize for their effort towards raising social awareness and community development during the Durga Puja celebrations.
International Disability Day and Youth Festival which was intensively held in Khowai
The celebrations in Khowai were hosted at the Khowai Government Higher Secondary School and District magistrate Chandni Chandran who was the chief guest at this event, opened the occasion. She further urged society to support the needy people and called for efforts to help in joining the government efforts for the welfare of people with disabilities.
The program featured awards given to 10 disabled students who excelled academically and responsibly. Sports events which included 50-meter runs, high jump and long jumps were held, where 40 children and youth with disabilities participated actively in them all with enthusiasm.
West Tripura Para Games para events and disability day activitieswere done
The events in West Tripura were witnessed at Khudiram Bose English Higher Secondary School which was launched by social welfare minister, Tinku Roy. Minister entirely support the sentiment that the development of the country cannot be complete if personnel with disabilities are not factored in. The minister also launched district level boq “Khelo Tripura Para games”.
With the new policies announced concerning people with disabilities, he would go on to implement a proposed budget. Other policies included the releasement of 2000 monthly allowance as well as issuing Unique Disability Identity Cards to over forty thousand people in the state. Prime Minister’s Merit Award scheme organized by the Chief Minister Awards were alos given to ten worthy students.
Competitions such as shot put, 50-meter races blind cricket, musical chairs and wheelchair races were organized in which winners were awarded certificates and trophies. Winners will qualify for the Para Games to be held at state level on December 18-19 at Swami Vivekananda Stadium.
