Agartala 8 Feb, 2025: Tripura is steadily advancing in the fields of sports, culture, and education. The state’s young talents have made their mark at the national level in these domains. However, drug addiction is pushing a section of the youth towards destruction. We must all pledge to stay away from drugs and help others break free from addiction. Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament at Umakanta Football Stadium this evening.
In the girls’ category, Gomati district emerged as the champion by defeating Sepahijala district 8-0. In the boys’ category, Gomati district also clinched the title by defeating South Tripura district 2-1. The Tribal Welfare Department organized this four-day-long tournament.
At the closing ceremony, the Sports Minister emphasized the need to combat drug abuse among the youth and also urged collective efforts to prevent child marriage. He highlighted Tripura’s achievements in sports over the past three years. Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma also addressed the event, stating that indigenous youth are enthusiastic about sports. He stressed that with the right opportunities and facilities, they could showcase their talents. He added that efforts are underway to develop sports infrastructure across the state, with sports schools being set up in Killa, Takarjala, and Khowai at an estimated cost of ₹27 crore.
The event was also attended by Youth Affairs and Sports Department Director S.B. Nath and Tripura Football Association Secretary Amit Chowdhury. Tribal Welfare Department Director Subhasis Das welcomed everyone to the program. At the end of the ceremony, dignitaries presented awards to the winning teams, best male and female footballers, Man of the Match, and top goal scorers.
