High-Power Electric Line Electrocutes ISCON ‘Phera Rath’, Causing Devastation
June 28, 2023: Kumarghat, Unakoti District – In a heart-wrenching tragedy that unfolded during a religious occasion today, six individuals lost their lives, and at least twenty others sustained serious injuries when a high-power 133 KV electric line came into contact with the ‘Phera Rath’ (return chariot) of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISCON). The incident took place in Kumarghat, a town known for its vibrant ISCON festivities.
According to police sources, the ISCON ‘Ratha,’ a renowned event in Kumarghat, was making its way back from the Motor Stand area toward the ISCON temple around 4:45 PM when disaster struck near the Town Hall. The towering iron chariot accidentally touched a hanging high-tension electric wire, resulting in a fatal electrocution. Numerous individuals, including those pushing the ‘Rath’ and those seated on top, were affected by the electric shock and forcefully thrown off the chariot. Initial estimates indicate that six people, including young children, lost their lives on the spot, while an additional twenty-four suffered severe injuries.
Responding swiftly to the calamity, police personnel and Fire Brigade vans rushed to the scene to provide assistance. Four critically injured individuals were immediately transported to GBP Hospital in Agartala, while twenty others were sent to local hospitals in Kumarghat, Ambassa, Fatikroy, and Kulai. Sources report that several victims remain in critical condition, raising concerns about the possibility of further casualties. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident occurred due to the towering height of the chariot, which came into contact with the lower-than-usual hanging 33 KV electric line. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, deeply shocked by the loss of multiple lives, promptly departed for Kumarghat upon receiving the distressing news. The Chief Minister is expected to reach the site within the shortest possible time to assess the situation personally.
