By Anupam Pal (Kailashahar): In another major success against narcotics in Unakoti district, police from Irani Police Station seized 50 bottles of banned codeine phosphate-based Pibrex cough syrup during a special anti-drug operation conducted on Sunday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, the police team carried out a raid at Ward No. 5 of Lotiyapura area under Irani Police Station in Gournagar block at around 3 PM. During the search operation at the residence of Jontu Malakar (30), son of Parindra Malakar, police recovered the illegal cough syrup bottles.
The operation was conducted in the presence of DSP Ashesh Debbarma, Inspector Tarani Jamatia, Sub-Inspector Pankaj Barman, along with police and TSR personnel. However, no arrests could be made as no one was present in the house during the raid.
According to police sources, allegations had been surfacing for a long time regarding the illegal storage and trafficking of narcotic substances in the area. Based on confidential information, the police launched the operation and seized the banned cough syrup, which falls under prohibited narcotic substances.
Police have initiated the process of registering a specific case under the NDPS Act. Investigators are also trying to determine whether more individuals are involved in the racket.
The police administration stated that anti-drug operations across the district will be intensified further in the coming days.
