Constable Dismissed Over Fraud Case; Two Women Detained in High-Level Probe
Tripura, 17 May 2026: A major controversy has erupted in Tripura Police after huge amounts of unaccounted cash were allegedly recovered from the residence of police constable Piyush Debbarma in Ambassa, Dhalai district. Following a DIG-level investigation, police have detained two women Nand Rani Debbarma, wife of the constable, and Sanjana Debbarma, reportedly a health department employee.
Police sources alleged that the accused lured people by promising unusually high financial returns and subsequently misappropriated public money. Investigators claim that constable Piyush Debbarma directly assisted the operation.
After the recovery of cash from the constable’s residence on Friday, the incident triggered widespread outrage across the state. A senior police officer of DIG rank was assigned to lead the investigation. On Saturday, constable Piyush Debbarma was dismissed from service.
The probe has reportedly revealed the involvement of several other personnel linked to the police and TSR battalions, including some constables from the East Women Police Station and jawans from multiple TSR battalions.
Meanwhile, videos allegedly linked to the accused have surfaced on social media, showing lavish spending and bundles of cash being handled. Another viral clip reportedly shows TSR 14 Battalion jawan Ajit Debbarma packing cash into plastic bags, while other uniformed personnel are seen present at the location.
Speaking on the matter, the IG confirmed that an FIR has been registered. However, officials stated that the recovered money has not yet been officially accounted for in the investigation.
