Tripura, 31 Jan 2026: Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) will begin an eviction drive from February 3 against individuals and traders conducting business illegally by encroaching on public land within Agartala city.
In particular, traders operating at Bottala Howrah Market without valid AMC authorization have been given time until February 7 to vacate voluntarily. AMC has made it clear that if they fail to comply, a full-scale eviction drive will commence at Howrah Market from February 8. The civic body has also announced plans to redevelop Howrah Market in a new and organized manner.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the AMC Conference Hall, chaired by Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder. The meeting was attended by corporators, AMC Commissioner Saju Bahid A, officials from the Traffic Department, Task Force, Public Works Department (PWD), and Agartala Smart City authorities.
Addressing a press conference at the AMC Conference Hall on Friday, Mayor Dipak Majumder said that Agartala’s population is steadily increasing, leading to rising traffic congestion, while large shopping malls are also coming up across the city. Keeping in mind the population growth for the next 20 years, AMC has prepared a long-term plan to systematically develop and beautify the city.
He informed that the state government is working to develop Agartala, Dharmanagar, and Udaipur as satellite towns. There is also a proposal to construct another flyover in Agartala. Additionally, plans are in place to install three new pump sets at Shakuntala Road, Ramnagar Road No. 4, and near Satsangha Ashram.
The Mayor emphasized that AMC is committed to keeping Agartala clean and well-organized. He stated that legal action will be taken against businesses operating outside designated vending zones and vehicles parked outside parking zones. Only vendors with valid AMC licenses and movable pushcarts measuring 6 feet by 4 feet will be allowed to operate within the city, and they may conduct business up to 11:00 PM.
He further said that AMC, in coordination with the Traffic Department, will ensure that vehicles are not parked on covered drains. Restaurants, small hotels, and food stalls set up on covered drains will be removed to ensure smooth pedestrian movement.
Mayor Majumder added that Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has directed that Agartala be kept clean and beautiful. In line with this vision, the Chief Minister has announced a Cleanliness Award Scheme. Under the scheme, clubs and social organizations contributing to city cleanliness will receive prizes—₹3 lakh for first place, ₹2 lakh for second place, ₹1 lakh for third place, and ₹50,000 as a consolation prize.
AMC currently has 51 wards. The Mayor noted that the Chief Minister has already inaugurated several drinking water plants, and efforts are underway to ensure safe drinking water supply across all AMC areas. He also said that multiple development projects are currently in progress under AMC, Agartala Smart City, PWD, Drinking Water, and Health departments, and these works will be completed soon.
During road construction works, arrangements will be made to protect underground cables. The Mayor also warned that no advertisements will be allowed without state government approval. AMC will take strict action against advertisements placed on government offices, government buildings, and light posts.
The press conference was also attended by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Subrata Bhattacharjee.
