Dehradun, 25 Jan 2026: The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has strongly condemned the police action against a peaceful 24-hour hunger strike organised by the Northeast Students’ Association, Dehradun, demanding justice for Anjel Chakma.
According to AICSU, the hunger strike was symbolic, disciplined, and completely non-violent, aimed at drawing attention to issues faced by students from the Northeast. The organisation stated that the protest did not disrupt public order in any manner.
In a press statement, AICSU alleged that police personnel dismantled and destroyed the protest tent without any prior notice or provocation. The student body said the action created fear and mental distress among the participating students, many of whom were peacefully exercising their democratic rights.
AICSU described the incident as a serious violation of democratic values and the fundamental right to peaceful protest guaranteed under the Constitution. The union asserted that the use of force against non-violent student protesters raises grave concerns about the safety, freedom, and dignity of students.
Reiterating its commitment to constitutional and democratic forms of protest, AICSU expressed full solidarity with the Northeast Students’ Association, Dehradun. The organisation urged the district administration and concerned authorities to resolve the matter through dialogue rather than coercive measures that shrink democratic space.
The Chakma students’ body also appealed to the media, civil society organisations, and democratic institutions to take note of the incident and stand in support of the right to peaceful protest.
