Agartala, Jan 14: A journalist was once again attacked on Tuesday night, raising serious concerns over the safety of media persons on duty. Mrinal Kanti Debnath, a journalist of Dainik Sambad, was assaulted by miscreants while returning home after completing his work.
According to reports, Debnath’s auto-rickshaw broke down in the Milanchakra (Bardowali) area under A.D. Nagar Police Station. At the spot, a fire was seen burning in a dustbin, where personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services were present. As part of his professional duty, Debnath took out his mobile phone to record the incident.

At that moment, a group of miscreants attacked him and physically assaulted him, leaving him injured. He sustained injuries to his face after being beaten by the attackers.
On receiving the information, office-bearers of the Press Club contacted the police station late at night. On Wednesday morning, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, senior journalist of Dainik Sambad Dipanta Majumder, along with other media persons, visited the incident site and followed up the matter with the police.

The incident has triggered strong condemnation from the journalist fraternity, who have demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and ensured security for journalists while performing their professional duties.
