Tripura, 11 Jan 2026: More than 15 picnic passengers were injured in a head-on collision between a Max vehicle and a Swift car at the Chuchurimai area of Charilam while they were returning home to Sonamura after a picnic from Khumulung.
The injured were first taken to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital, from where they were immediately referred to the Trauma Centre of GBP Hospital, Agartala for advanced treatment due to the seriousness of their injuries.
According to eyewitnesses and injured passengers, the driver of the Max vehicle fled the scene after the accident. Family members of the injured have alleged that the accident was caused intentionally and due to rash and reckless driving by the Max vehicle driver.
“We were returning home after a picnic when suddenly the accident happened. There were around 13 of us in the vehicle including children. Two persons were seriously injured and many others, including children, also suffered injuries. The incident occurred near the station area.”
One of the injured passengers said,
“We were coming towards Sonamura. We repeatedly told the driver that there were children in the vehicle and asked him to drive slowly, but he did not listen. He drove at a high speed and deliberately crashed into another vehicle. We suspect it was done intentionally. After the accident, the driver ran away.”
The injured person further added that the Max vehicle was from Sonamura and around 15 members from their family were injured in total. The collision reportedly took place near the Marilam Bridge area while crossing it.
Police have started an investigation into the incident and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver.
