Tripura, 07 Jan 2026: A tribute ceremony was held today at the lobby of the Tripura Legislative Assembly in memory of the late Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. The programme was organised by the Tripura Legislative Assembly to honour the former Speaker.
At the beginning of the ceremony, floral tributes were paid to the portrait of the late Biswabandhu Sen by Acting Speaker Ramprasad Pal, Parliamentary Affairs, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury, Chief Whip of the Assembly Kalyani Saha Roy, Assembly Secretary A.K. Nath, Additional Secretary Biplab Das, along with other officers and staff of the Assembly.
Addressing the gathering, Acting Speaker Ramprasad Pal said that Biswabandhu Sen was elected as an MLA four times and that this was the first time in the history of the Tripura Legislative Assembly that a Speaker passed away while in office. He described the late Speaker as a distinguished personality and an able politician who was respected even by opposition members. He said that some individuals leave behind lasting memories even after their demise. He prayed for the peace of the departed soul and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the late Speaker was not only a politician but also a poet, writer, singer, and a great admirer of Rabindranath Tagore. He had deep knowledge of parliamentary affairs and believed in nationalist ideology. He was known for raising his voice against injustice. The Minister said that politics is a noble mission and that not everyone can become a politician, as it requires sensitivity and the ability to understand the pain and suffering of people. He added that many great works in society have been achieved through the vision of politicians. He also recalled that the state has had 10 Chief Ministers and 13 Speakers who worked for the welfare of the state and society, and said they should all be remembered. He stated that Biswabandhu Sen devoted his life to public welfare and will continue to live in the hearts of the people.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury said that Biswabandhu Sen was a large-hearted leader who treated all MLAs equally. He discharged his duties as Speaker with efficiency and had sharp knowledge of economics, social issues, and parliamentary procedures. He was also a lover of music and an inspiring personality. He said that the unfinished work of the late Speaker should be completed collectively.
Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy said that the late Speaker worked in the Assembly with honesty and dedication. She remarked that good people live on in our thoughts and memories.
The welcome address was delivered by Assembly Secretary A.K. Nath. The programme concluded with a one-minute silence in memory of the departed Speaker.
