Tripura, 29 Sep 2026: A joint team of the BSF, Customs and police seized around Tk 24.5 lakh in Bangladeshi currency from the Matinagar area under Sonamura police station today and detained a 30-year-old man.
The detained youth was identified as Tapas Sarkar, a resident of North Kalamchoura.
According to preliminary investigation, Sarkar was allegedly carrying the currency from Bishalgarh to Sonamura and was supposed to deliver it to Zakir and Bahab Mia of Kulubari. Investigators said the money had allegedly been brought from Suman Saha of Bishalgarh.
Sonamura Customs Superintendent Alok Kumar said the youth was travelling from Bishalgarh towards Sonamura in an Eeco vehicle bearing registration number TR01B20219 when the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs.
The seized currency, the detained youth and the vehicle used for transportation are currently in the custody of Sonamura Customs.
The Customs authorities suspect that the Bangladeshi currency was being transported for financial transactions linked to illegal cross-border trade. Further investigation is underway to identify others allegedly involved in the case.
