Agartala, 18 Sep 2026: A woman was allegedly robbed of a gold chain worth approximately ₹1.20 lakh while travelling to her MGNREGA worksite in the Jogendranagar area, raising concerns over the safety of residents amid reports of chain-snatching incidents in and around Agartala ahead of Durga Puja.
The victim, identified as Subhadra Debbarma, a resident of Jugal Kishore Nagar, said that two unidentified men on a motorcycle approached her from behind near the Jogendranagar Panchayat area and forcibly snatched her gold chain.
According to her statement, she attempted to catch the suspects, but they managed to flee from the spot on their motorcycle. She said neither of the two men was wearing a helmet and provided descriptions of their clothing to assist the investigation.
The stolen chain reportedly weighed approximately 12 annas and was valued at around ₹1.20 lakh. The victim said she had purchased the jewellery after considerable financial hardship and appealed to the authorities to help recover it.
Following the incident, a General Diary (GD) was reportedly lodged at the police station. Police personnel visited the area and conducted an initial investigation.
The victim stated that the incident was captured on CCTV cameras. According to her account, police have initiated an investigation and are examining the footage to identify the suspects. Further developments are awaited.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women and other residents travelling to work in areas surrounding Agartala, particularly ahead of the Durga Puja festival.
