Assam, September 18, 2026: Tripura’s iconic GI-tagged traditional handloom textile, Risa, is entering a new era of sustainable textile innovation with the launch of ‘Waa Risa’, a project that combines indigenous weaving traditions with modern bamboo yarn technology.
The initiative was unveiled at the National Institute of Design (NID), Jorhat, Assam, on the occasion of World Bamboo Day, September 18. The project aims to promote sustainable textile production while preserving the cultural identity and traditional craftsmanship associated with Tripura’s Risa.
Waa Risa introduces eco-friendly bamboo yarn as an alternative to conventional textile thread, bringing together bamboo’s natural properties and the skills of indigenous handloom artisans. The initiative seeks to explore new opportunities for bamboo-based textiles while maintaining the authenticity of traditional Tripuri weaving.
The project is spearheaded by the Nokhayung Hamkhrai Society in collaboration with the Orient Group of Companies. The partnership brings together village-level artisans, design institutions and modern textile technology to develop innovative and sustainable handloom products.
The initiative is also associated with NGO founder Billow Jamatia and Bamboo Technologies’ Samir Jamatia and team, who are involved in the development of the project. Waa Risa focuses on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for indigenous weavers while promoting Tripura’s textile heritage in wider markets.
The integration of bamboo yarn into traditional Risa weaving represents an effort to connect indigenous cultural heritage with contemporary sustainable fashion. Through this approach, the project aims to support artisan empowerment, encourage environmentally responsible textile production and strengthen the role of bamboo innovation in the Northeast’s craft economy.
Tripura’s Risa, recognised for its cultural significance and traditional weaving heritage, serves as the foundation for this new initiative. The development of Waa Risa highlights the potential of combining traditional knowledge with modern materials to create opportunities for the region’s handloom and bamboo industries.
The launch marks a new development in efforts to promote sustainable textiles and showcase Tripura’s indigenous craftsmanship on broader platforms.
