Agartala, September 15: Tripura West Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb has facilitated financial assistance of Rs 50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the advanced treatment of Soham Paul, a resident of Ramnagar in Agartala.
Soham is currently receiving treatment at Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) conveyed the approval to the hospital’s Director through an official letter dated September 7, 2026.
The assistance was sanctioned after Deb took up Soham’s case with the PMNRF. The MP said he forwarded the application after being informed about the patient’s need for specialised medical treatment.
The sanction, however, is subject to conditions specified by the PMO. The admissible assistance will be limited to 50 per cent of the actual treatment expenditure or Rs 50,000, whichever is lower.
Following the approval, Deb expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending the assistance to the patient.
“I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, for sanctioning medical assistance of ₹50,000 from the PMNRF to Shri Soham Pal,” he said.
Deb said the sanction came within a short period after the application was forwarded, and described the response as evidence of the Prime Minister’s consideration of requests from families requiring financial support for critical medical care.
He said the PMNRF has previously extended assistance to patients undergoing costly medical procedures and treatments. Such support, he added, can help families facing significant financial pressure because of serious health emergencies.
The PMNRF provides financial relief in cases involving calamities and eligible medical emergencies. Assistance towards treatment is granted under prescribed guidelines and is subject to applicable conditions.
Patients from Tripura have also received assistance from the fund in recent years for specialised treatment, providing support to families struggling to meet medical expenses.
For Soham’s family, the latest approval is expected to reduce part of the financial burden associated with his treatment in Kolkata. The actual amount payable under the sanction will depend on the eligible expenditure and the conditions laid down by the PMO.
