Agartala, August 27: A young woman allegedly died after jumping from the top of a large overhead water tank at a water treatment plant near the AG Office in Kunjaban, Agartala, on Thursday afternoon. Police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot following the incident.
According to police, information was received at around 1:20 PM that a woman had jumped from the overhead tank of the Raj Bhavan Water Plant, located behind the old Raj Bhavan area. Police reached the spot and began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The identity of the deceased was initially unclear. However, police later indicated that she was believed to be a resident of Agartala and may have been working somewhere near the Heritage Park area. Her identity was reportedly being verified. Family members were also contacted, though police said the deceased’s father was in shock and unable to provide clear details immediately.
A local eyewitness and manager at the site said the woman appeared to be around 24–25 years old ( Chitranka Hazarika) was alone. According to him, she was seen on top of the structure, and several people called out to her repeatedly, asking her to come down. Within moments, she allegedly jumped.
A major question before the investigators is how the woman entered the restricted water-treatment plant area and reached the top of the overhead tank. Police said the plant has a boundary and the gate was reportedly closed. Investigators are examining whether she entered by crossing the boundary or through another route.
Police have taken two mobile phones and the woman’s footwear into their possession as part of the investigation. An FSL team and women police officers were also called to the scene. The body is expected to be sent for post-mortem examination.
Police have not yet confirmed the reason behind the incident. Officials said they would investigate whether any personal, family or other circumstances were involved.
