Agartala, June 29: Acting on a tip-off, Airport Police in Agartala arrested eight Bangladeshi nationals in two separate operations near MBB Airport. Police said the men were allegedly planning to travel to another state using the airport before they were intercepted.
According to the Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station, Sushanta Deb, police had received specific intelligence that four Bangladeshi nationals would arrive at MBB Airport to board a flight to another state. Acting on the information, Airport Police, with assistance from airport staff, detained the four suspects.
During interrogation, the detained men allegedly revealed information that led police to arrest four more Bangladeshi nationals from the airport area on the following day, taking the total number of arrests to eight.
Police said four of the accused have been produced before the court, while the remaining four are in police custody. Investigators have sought five days of police remand for further questioning.
Preliminary investigation suggests the group intended to travel to another state, but police are still trying to determine how they entered India, their exact route of travel, and whether any human trafficking or smuggling network was involved.
Authorities have seized the suspects’ personal belongings, including their mobile phones, as part of the investigation. All eight detainees are male.
Police said the motive behind their entry into India and the identities of any facilitators will be established after detailed interrogation. The investigation is ongoing.
