Agartala, March 24, 2026: Tension has begun surfacing in parts of Tripura soon after the announcement of candidates for the ensuing elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). An alleged attack on supporters of Tipra Motha has been reported from Lathabari under the No. Asharambari–Halhali constituency.
According to sources, Tipra Motha candidate Champa Hawar had visited the Bharat Sardar area, where he was welcomed by local party workers and supporters. After the interaction, a small group of 4–5 supporters was returning home when they were allegedly attacked.
The incident reportedly took place near the residence of Shaitkumar Debbarma in Lathabari. Victims claim that two youths suddenly appeared with sticks and began assaulting them. Within minutes, two to three motorcycles arrived carrying additional assailants, taking the total number of attackers to around eight or nine.
“They were armed with sticks, bricks, and stones and started attacking us suddenly,” one of the victims said, adding that the attack appeared unprovoked.
At least four people sustained injuries in the incident. The injured have been identified as Bikash Debbarma, Abhijit, Shaitkumar Debbarma, and Amrit.
When asked about the identity or political affiliation of the attackers, the victims said they could not recognize them. “We don’t know who they were. They seemed to be young boys, around 16 to 22 years old,” a victim stated.
Tipra Motha candidate Prasmita Debbarma condemned the incident and said that the matter would be reported to the police after verifying details. “The attackers are yet to be identified. We will file a complaint once the situation is clearer,” he said.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. The incident has raised concerns over law and order as political activities intensify ahead of the ADC elections.
