Tripura, 12 Dec 2025: A major drug trafficking attempt was foiled on Friday afternoon at the Churaibari police checkpost on the Tripura–Assam border, where police seized a large quantity of dry ganja and arrested five individuals, including four women from Bihar.
During routine vehicle checking on National Highway 08, police intercepted an Alto car bearing registration number TR05B–0314. As officers initiated a search, they uncovered the involvement of an inter-state drug trafficking network. The police detained the vehicle for thorough inspection, during which they discovered 24 packets of dry ganja hidden inside the car.
According to police, the contraband—packed in various-sized packets—was concealed expertly beneath passenger bags, inside secret chambers under the dashboard, and beneath the seats. Some packets were also tied to the women’s bodies. In total, 20 kilograms of dry ganja were recovered, with an estimated black-market value of around ₹6 lakh.
The arrested women, all residents of Bihar, have been identified as Mongli Devi (28), Kavita Devi (35), Anita Devi (38), and Sutur Kumari (30). The driver, Sandeep Malakar (30), hailing from the Dharmanagar–Haflong area of North Tripura, was also taken into custody.
Churaibari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Debabrata Biswas stated that although the women appeared to be ordinary passengers at first, inconsistencies in their behaviour and the vehicle’s movement aroused suspicion. This led the police to conduct a deeper search, eventually uncovering the hidden narcotics.
Police sources added that the arrested individuals had procured the ganja from the Ambassa region and were planning to transport it to Bihar. Preliminary investigation suggests that this trafficking route has been active for a long time.
A case has already been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the accused will be produced before the Dharmanagar District & Sessions Court. Authorities also noted that checking and surveillance at the Churaibari checkpoint have been further intensified in recent times to combat drug smuggling activities.
