Agartala, Sept 16: Specialist doctors of the Gastroenterology Department at Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital successfully performed a rare and complex surgery, saving the life of a 37-year-old woman from Tuisindrai, Teliamura in Khowai district.
The woman had been suffering for the past two years with severe complications. Whenever she ate, she experienced chest pain, followed by vomiting, with food regurgitating through her nose and mouth. Seeking medical help, she was admitted to the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of AGMC & GBP Hospital on August 30, 2025, under the supervision of expert doctors.
After thorough medical investigations, doctors confirmed that she was suffering from a large hiatal hernia, a condition where part of the stomach pushes into the chest cavity, causing major health issues. According to the medical team, surgery is the only treatment for such cases.
On September 2, 2025, a team of specialists led by Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra, Head of Gastroenterology Surgery Department, successfully performed an advanced laparoscopic surgery to treat the hernia. The team included Dr. A. Venkateshwarlu, Dr. Soumen Sutradhar, and Dr. Debesh. The anesthesia team comprised Dr. Anupam Chakraborty, Dr. Asit Bhattacharjee, Dr. Swapan Debbarma, Dr. Shubhankar Chowbe, and Dr. Jagriti, with full support from OT nurses and technicians.
Remarkably, within six hours of the operation, the patient was able to consume liquid food and gradually resumed normal eating. Doctors noted that such advanced laparoscopic hiatal hernia surgeries had never been performed in Tripura before.
While this type of surgery in private hospitals costs between ₹2.5 lakh to ₹4 lakh, at AGMC & GBP Hospital, it was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
The patient recovered well under observation and was discharged from the hospital on September 6, 2025. The Health Department shared the news through an official press release.
