Tripura; August 29, 2025: A shocking incident of attempted sexual assault and harassment has come to light in the AD Nagar area of Agartala, leading to the arrest of a landlord by the West Agartala Women Police Station.
The accused, identified as Mintu Debbarma, son of Lt. Manish Debbarma and a resident of MB Tilla, Road No. 5 in AD Nagar, is alleged to have sexually harassed and attempted to rape two 17-year-old girl students who were tenants in his building.

The Incident
According to the formal complaint filed by the victims’ mothers, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 29, 2025, at approximately 1:00 AM. The two minor girls, who were preparing for an examination, were taking a break on their balcony when the landlord, Mintu Debbarma, suddenly approached them.
The complaint details that Mintu Debbarma made explicit and malicious sexual advances towards them. He allegedly propositioned them, saying, “Have sexual intercourse with me, otherwise I will not let you stay in this area. I will not tell anyone if you have sexual intercourse with me, I will give you lots of money, I will even marry you, let you live luxury life.”
When the girls begged him to leave, reminding him they were like his own daughters, he reportedly did not listen. As they tried to flee, he physically restrained them by grabbing their hands and touching their private parts. Their screams for help alerted neighbours, who intervened and rescued them.
The complaint further states that while fleeing, Mintu Debbarma threatened the girls, saying he would not spare them if he ever escaped police custody. It also mentions a previous alleged incident involving another friend, Map**tti Reang, which went unreported due to fear.

Official Response and Arrest
The Officer-in-Charge of the West Agartala Women Police Station confirmed the arrest. “We received a complaint from two minor girls residing in a rented house in AD Nagar. The landlord’s son has been accused of molesting them. We have already detained the accused. A case has been registered and investigation is underway,” the OC stated.
Police officials have assured that the matter is being taken seriously. “We have spoken with the OC and the SDPO. They have said the investigation will be conducted properly and the strictest possible action will be taken against the culprit,” said Suraj Debbarma, President of the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF).
Public and Political Outcry
The incident has sparked significant outrage on social media and among local communities.
FM Bru, Tripura Artist – A fellow tenant, who claims to have helped apprehend the accused, posted online: “Agartala is not a safe place for women… I called the police and handed the accused person to police. Today if they’re the only person in the rent something far could have happened.” The post urged women to be cautious when choosing rental accommodations.
The case also drew the immediate attention of Tripura’s royal scion and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. He publicly directed the Youth Tipra Federation to investigate the matter, stating, “Requesting YTF to please go and find out what has happened in this matter immediately! We have to show our unity and solidarity with the affected people.”
YTF President Suraj Debbarma, who accompanied the victims’ families to the police station, strongly criticized the state government’s record on women’s safety. He called the government a “failure” on this issue and demanded swift and severe punishment for the accused. He emphasized that such solidarity should transcend community lines, stating, “If this happens to a Bengali or a Muslim girl tomorrow, we will stand with them too.”
The accused is currently in police custody and is expected to be produced before a court soon. The police have registered a case and a further investigation is ongoing.
