Agartala, 27 August 2025: A rare incident of honesty and humanity was witnessed at IGM Hospital when a man returned a wallet containing ₹15,000 to its rightful owner and both families were later blessed with daughters on the same day.
Humayun Miah Sarkar had admitted his pregnant wife to IGM Hospital, while Sumon Biswas of South Chandrapur had also admitted his expectant wife there. Amid the hospital rush, Humayun lost his wallet, which contained cash and documents. After failing to trace it, he sought help from West Agartala Police Station. A police officer accompanied him back to the hospital to search for it.
At that moment, Sumon Biswas came forward and handed over the wallet. He later explained his actions in detail:
“Sir, my wife was admitted at IGM. In the morning, after eating, I was resting in the sitting area of the ward when I noticed a wallet lying beside me. I picked it up and kept looking at it for nearly half an hour, thinking that maybe its owner would come searching. I didn’t touch the money. Later, when I got a call to bring medicines, I kept the wallet safely in my pocket and showed it to my brother-in-law. Inside there was only a photocopy of an Aadhaar card with the name ‘Humayun Miah’—no phone number. I didn’t even count the money, though I could see there was a lot of cash. I simply decided to return it to its owner.”
The wallet was returned intact, with ₹15,000 cash inside. Humayun was overwhelmed with joy, while Sumon felt equal happiness for doing the right thing. Their joy doubled when, shortly afterward, both received the news that their wives had delivered healthy baby girls.
Recognizing the act of honesty, West Agartala Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee felicitated both men. Police noted that people like Sumon prove that integrity and humanity still exist beyond caste and community barriers.
