Tripura, 21 August, 2025: Tension gripped Baikhora’s Charkabai Madhyapara on Thursday evening after locals gathered at Baikhora Police Station demanding justice for the death of 10-year-old Asmi Majumder, daughter of Sanjib Majumder.
The child died recently, allegedly due to medical negligence. On August 19, her father lodged a complaint at Baikhora Police Station against Dr. Ranbir Bhumik of Baikhora Primary Health Centre.
Villagers met Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bishnu Chandra Das and pressed for the “harshest punishment” against the doctor, alleging that negligence during treatment led to Asmi’s death.
Speaking to the media, OC Bishnu Chandra Das said: “The complaint regarding the child’s death from a snake bite was submitted on August 19. There was some confusion over receiving the copy of the complaint that day, but today the receipt has been handed over to the family. The matter is under enquiry. A technical report is required, and once we receive it, appropriate legal action will follow. If negligence by the doctor is established, strict punishment will be ensured.”
He further explained, “As per Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), if a doctor or health worker is found guilty of negligence leading to death, there are provisions for the maximum level of punishment. For this case, permission has been sought from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, and the Chief Medical Officer of South Tripura has also been asked to provide a detailed report on the medicines prescribed by the doctor. The investigation will be completed within 14 days.”
