Agartala, Aug 20: The 34th Manipuri Language Day celebrations began today at Nazrul Kalakshetra, Agartala, in a two-day program organized by the Directorate of Kokborok & Other Minority Languages.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by L. Joychandra Singh, President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal, who formally inaugurated the event. In his address, he emphasized that respect and love for one’s mother tongue is the true identity of a nation, noting that Manipuri is one of the ancient languages of Indian culture. He recalled that Manipuri was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992.



Speakers at the event included Nila Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chairman of Manipuri Language Development Advisory Committee, L. Birmangal Singh, President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura Branch, Anandahari Jamatia, Director of Kokborok & Other Minority Languages, and Sabyasachi Singh, Deputy Director of the department.
As part of the program, four eminent personalities were felicitated for their special contributions to the growth of Manipuri literature and culture. The celebration began with a colorful rally that paraded through the city.
On the second day, the event will feature a seminar and a poets’ conference at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yuba Awas.
