Tripura, August 17: A pall of grief descended on Chandrapur Colony No. 3 under the Matarbari Assembly constituency on Sunday morning, when a 65-year-old retired school teacher drowned in a pond near his house while collecting lotus flowers for Mansa Puja rituals.
The deceased has been identified as Amal Kanti Saha, a resident of Chandrapur Colony and a former education department teacher. According to family members, around 9:30 a.m. he went down to the pond adjacent to his home to collect lotus flowers but failed to resurface. Local residents rushed to rescue him and immediately shifted him to Gomati District Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
His son, Raghav Chandra, recounted the tragic moments, saying the family began searching when his father did not return, only to find him submerged in the pond. The incident left family members and neighbors devastated, cutting short the household’s puja rituals midway.
Hospital authorities confirmed the cause of death as drowning. “He was brought in by relatives around 11 a.m., but he had already passed away due to drowning,” said the attending doctor.
The sudden demise of the respected retired teacher has cast a shadow of mourning over the entire Chandrapur area, where locals remembered him as a humble and devoted individual.
