Tripura, 6 August 2025: Following the tragic death of Mihir Lal Debnath, a truck driver who lost his life after being trapped in his vehicle for several hours in Teliamura, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday announced a series of firm actions aimed at ensuring accountability and justice.
In a statement issued via social media, the Chief Minister confirmed that the State Government has taken immediate steps in response to the widespread outrage and administrative lapses exposed by the incident.
Key Measures Announced by the Chief Minister:
- A three-member inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the incident, led by the Secretary of Revenue (Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management).
- The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Teliamura has been suspended with immediate effect.
- A show-cause notice has been served to the District Magistrate and Collector of Khowai district for failing to ensure timely response and coordination.
- Financial assistance of ₹6 lakh has been sanctioned for the bereaved family — ₹4 lakh from the Disaster Management Fund and ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Ministers to Visit the Bereaved Family
To extend the government’s condolences and support, Minister for Social Welfare & Social Education Tinku Roy and Minister for Industry & Commerce Santana Chakma will visit the residence of the deceased.
Chief Minister Dr. Saha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and justice, stating, “We remain firmly committed to justice and to upholding the people’s faith in our government.”
The developments come amid widespread criticism of the state’s disaster response mechanism, after it failed to act in time to save the driver despite his desperate pleas for help. The state administration now faces growing pressure to ensure that such a lapse does not occur again.
Further updates are awaited as the inquiry committee begins its investigation.
