Agartala, August 1: Citizens of Tripura are increasingly showing trust in the state’s healthcare system, and the trend of seeking treatment outside the state has significantly declined, said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. Speaking at the 21st Foundation Day celebration of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) at the Karl Landsteiner Auditorium, the Chief Minister emphasized the state government’s continuous efforts to modernize healthcare infrastructure and establish a health hub in Tripura.
In his address, Dr. Saha recalled the journey of AGMC, which began in 2005. He urged everyone to respectfully remember those who contributed to its establishment. Highlighting the institution’s growing reputation nationwide, he encouraged students and faculty to uphold its prestige.

Currently, AGMC has 150 MBBS seats—up from its initial capacity of 100. Of these, 118 seats are reserved for students from Tripura, 22 for nominees of the central government, and 10 for students from other Northeastern states. Presently, 525 students are pursuing MBBS at the college. Since its inception, the college has produced 1,484 MBBS graduates, of which 1,270 are from Tripura. Many of these graduates are now serving with dedication in rural and remote areas of the state.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the college offers postgraduate (PG) courses in 20 subjects, with a total of 89 PG seats. He noted that procedures such as kidney transplants and other complex surgeries are now successfully being conducted within the state—something that was once unimaginable. The government is adopting and implementing multi-dimensional plans to further improve healthcare quality, including upgrading infrastructure in district hospitals.
During the event, AGMC’s annual report was released, and the Chief Minister formally inaugurated the wall magazine titled Udichi. Students who achieved outstanding academic results in both MBBS and PG courses were felicitated with mementos and certificates by the Chief Minister and other dignitaries.
The event was also addressed by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte and Swami Shubhakaranandaji Maharaj, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, Viveknagar. AGMC Principal Dr. Anup Kumar Saha delivered the welcome address. Other notable attendees included Director of Health Services Dr. Tapan Majumder, Director of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine Dr. Anjan Das, and Director of Medical Education Dr. H.P. Sharma.
