Khowai, July 30: In a major initiative to bolster rural social security, a total of 29,365 women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across six blocks of Tripura’s Khowai district have been newly enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY).
According to the Khowai District Mission Management Office of the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), enrolments were carried out across 223 Village Organizations spread over Khowai, Kalyanpur, Teliamura, Mungiakami, Padmabil, and Tulashikhar blocks. Among these, Teliamura block recorded the highest number of enrolments with 6,756 SHG members, closely followed by Khowai with 6,396, and Kalyanpur with 5,075. Tulashikhar accounted for 5,169 enrollees, while Padmabil and Mungiakami recorded 4,652 and 1,317 respectively.
The move is part of an ongoing effort to provide basic life insurance to rural women through PMJJBY, which offers coverage of ₹2 lakh at a minimal annual premium. Officials stated that the initiative not only strengthens social safety nets for women but also promotes financial literacy and inclusion across grassroots communities.
