Tripura, 28 July 2025: In a strong display of protest, residents of Chaumanu under Longtharai Valley subdivision locked the office of the School Inspector on Monday. The incident comes amid growing frustration over acute teacher shortages in the region’s schools.
According to sources, several schools in areas like Saptaram Para under Chaumanu are suffering due to a lack of adequate teaching staff. The Chaumanu School Inspector oversees 119 schools, of which 60 are reportedly functioning with only one teacher each. Despite the crisis, some of these lone teachers were recently transferred outside the district—seven schools were affected by such transfers.
This triggered outrage among the locals, who responded by locking the School Inspector’s office, demanding the cancellation of the transfer orders. They warned that the office would remain locked until their demands are met.
When contacted, School Inspector Moses Debbarma stated that the transfers were made as per directives from higher authorities and he was simply following orders. He also admitted that around 60 schools under his jurisdiction are being run by only one teacher, underlining the severity of the staffing crisis.
Locals have firmly stated that unless the transfer orders are revoked, they will not reopen the School Inspector’s office.
