Tripura, 10 July, 2025: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants in Tripura has been dismissed by the Tripura High Court today. The PIL (PIL No. 6/2025, Item 2) was filed by Dr. Bijoy Debbarma and Activies John Debbarma, seeking urgent legal measures to identify and repatriate undocumented immigrants allegedly residing in the state.
The petitioners had argued that the state must take immediate legal action to implement the Central Government’s directives on the issue, which were reportedly issued to all states on June 24. The PIL also sought transparency in the government’s strategy and preparedness to deal with the situation. However, after hearing the matter, the High Court dismissed the petition, citing that the Union Government has already issued specific instructions to all states regarding the handling of illegal immigrants, particularly those from Bangladesh and Myanmar, including the Rohingya population.
The court noted that it is essential to allow the state government adequate time at least two months to act upon these directives and implement necessary infrastructural measures. Senior Advocate Manish Goswami, representing the petitioners on behalf of the Supreme Court, appeared at the hearing along with Tripura-based advocates Mintu Debbarma, Anthony Debbarma, and Tapas Halam. The petition was supported by the Joint Action Committee, which was also present in court. “The issue of illegal immigration is not just a Tripura problem it’s a national issue,” stated the Joint Action Committee in a press briefing following the hearing. “We are not disheartened by today’s verdict.
We respect the court’s decision but will continue our fight for justice.” Dr. Bijoy Debbarma, speaking on behalf of the Committee, said, “We must remain united on this issue and continue our movement within the legal framework. We urge the public and the government to extend their support, including necessary funding, to tackle this threat to our national identity and security.” He added that if justice is not served in the High Court, the Committee is prepared to approach the Supreme Court. Advocate Manish Goswami stated, “Illegal immigrants have spread across the country.
The Government of India has issued guidelines to all states, including procedures for arrest, handling, and deportation of undocumented individuals. The law must be strictly followed to preserve national integrity.” Despite the dismissal of the PIL, the issue is expected to gain momentum in the coming months, as civic groups and legal activists continue to demand stronger enforcement and clearer action from both state and central governments.
