Tripura, 2nd July, 2025: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital are witnessing a transformative shift in public healthcare services, earning the trust of the people through consistent delivery of complex and critical medical care. With a growing reputation for excellence, the hospital’s Neurology Department has emerged as a beacon of hope for patients across Tripura and the Northeast.
Over the past one and a half years, the hospital has launched a dedicated male inpatient neurology ward and a 10-bed special care unit. The Urology Department has also been strengthened with advanced diagnostic capabilities such as Nerve Conduction Velocity Test, Repetitive Nerve Stimulation Test (for Myasthenia Gravis), and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) for identifying optic nerve disorders. In critical brain-related cases, advanced imaging like Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) is also performed.
Free Treatment Under Ayushman Bharat & CM-JAY
Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana (CM-JAY), many high-cost treatments and diagnostic services are now being offered free of cost to patients, especially those from BPL families.
Recently, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Dr. Abir Lal Nath, personally visited patients and their families in the Neurology ward, listening to their experiences. One middle-aged patient emotionally expressed disbelief at receiving such quality care in an AC ward at a government hospital, saying, “It feels like a dream.”
High-Cost Life-Saving Treatment — Now Free
One patient suffering from Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) received IVIG worth over ₹2 lakh. A female patient who endured chronic pain for years was administered Adalimumab injections worth ₹2 lakh, resulting in substantial relief. Another patient who had lost vision regained sight after receiving Rituximab — all completely free under PM-JAY.
A 36-year-old woman suffering from severe vision problems in her left eye, including double vision, underwent a VEP test which revealed signs of optic neuritis. She was admitted under BPL coverage and administered Rituximab worth ₹1 lakh. Following treatment, her vision was restored. Her radiant smile after recovery was described by Dr. Nath as an unforgettable moment — “It felt like all the colours of youth returned to her eyes.”
Celebrating Humanity Alongside Healthcare
Yesterday, the department observed National Doctors’ Day by cutting a cake with patients in the male neurology ward. Doctors and medical staff, led by Dr. Nath, spent quality time with patients, creating an emotional and healing atmosphere.
All Major Neurological Tests — Now Free
Tests such as EEG, NCV, MRI, CT scan, brain angiography, and blood work are now available at no cost to patients. Expensive treatments like IVIG, Rituximab, Botox therapy, and digital neuro-diagnostics are being offered regularly.
The goal is clear — no one should be denied care due to financial constraints. This initiative, led by dedicated young doctors like Dr. Abir Lal Nath with a vision for compassionate care, is fulfilling the dream of delivering world-class public healthcare in Tripura.
