Tripura, 29 May 2025: Residents of North Tripura district are reeling under the constant threat of thefts and robberies, which have become an almost nightly occurrence. Despite regular police patrols, gangs of thieves many allegedly drug-addicted youths are breaking into homes and fleeing with cash and gold ornaments.
In a similar incident on Wednesday night around 2:30 AM, a group of thieves struck two homes in North Phulbari village, Ward No. 4, under the jurisdiction of Churaibari Police Station. First, they broke down the main door of the house belonging to Piyush Das (son of the late Srikanta Das) and stole ₹15,000 in cash. Then, the gang targeted the neighboring house of Bimal Das (son of Haribal Das), entering through the kitchen window. They escaped with a one-tola gold chain and ₹12,000 in cash. However, while fleeing, they made a noise that woke the homeowner, who managed to identify one of the culprits.
Early in the morning, police rushed to the scene and arrested 24-year-old Atabur Rahman (son of the late Abdul Malik) from his in-laws’ house. He is a resident of Ward No. 3, East Churaibari. Upon interrogation and search, police recovered a knife, a crowbar, a cutter, and other tools used in the burglary from the location.
Police suspect Atabur Rahman may also be involved in a previous attempted robbery two days earlier, where one of the thieves escaped with an injured foot after being hurt during the attempt. Churaibari Second Officer-in-Charge Preetimoy Chakma informed that police will seek a five-day remand of the accused for further interrogation.
