Tribal Woman Critically Injured in Road Mishap at Kamalpur, Locals Block National Highway in Protest
Kamalpur, Tripura | May 25: A 37-year-old tribal housewife, Nipita Debbarma, sustained critical injuries after being struck by a speeding 12-wheeler truck near the Durga Chowmuhani naka point in Kamalpur on Friday morning. The incident sparked public outrage, leading to a road blockade on National Highway 208 by local residents.
According to police sources, the victim was on her way to work in a nearby rubber plantation when the truck, reportedly coming at high speed from the Manik Bhandar direction, hit her near the roadside checkpoint. Her husband, Pabitra Debbarma, resides in the same locality.
Eyewitnesses said the impact left Nipita with severe injuries, including deep wounds on her body and serious trauma to her head and knees. The local police immediately alerted the Fire and Emergency Services, who rushed to the spot and transported her to Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. After preliminary treatment, she was referred to Kulai Hospital in critical condition.
Speaking to reporters, attending physician Dr. Malin Debbarma said, “The patient has suffered major head and leg injuries. There is a possibility of internal damage, which is why we referred her to Kulai for advanced care.”
Following the accident, enraged locals detained the truck driver, identified as Tapas Sahajit. The crowd allegedly assaulted him before police intervened and took him to Kamalpur Hospital for treatment. The truck (registration number TR01AW-1610) was also vandalized at the scene and later seized by police.
In the immediate aftermath, locals staged a blockade on National Highway 208, disrupting traffic for several hours. Protesters demanded strict action against the driver and urgent measures to improve road safety in the area.
Kamalpur police have launched an investigation into the incident. Further legal action is expected.
