Major Success in Anti-Drug Operation by Churaibari Police: Cannabis Worth Nearly Rs 4 Crore Seized, Two Arrested
Tripura, 12 May 2025: In a significant breakthrough in the anti-drug operation, Churaibari Police seized a massive quantity of dry cannabis worth nearly Rs 4 crore and arrested two individuals from outside the state. The incident took place around 2 PM on Monday at the Churaibari Police Checkpoint. A six-wheeler truck bearing registration number UP58AT-1128, traveling from Agartala to Guwahati, was stopped for routine inspection.
Officer-in-Charge Khokan Saha noticed that the nuts on some electronic transformers loaded in the truck were unusually loose, which aroused his suspicion. Upon further inspection, he found packets of cannabis hidden inside the transformers. In total, ten transformers were being used to conceal the drugs.
A total of 96 packets, each containing 10 kilograms of dry cannabis, were recovered—amounting to 960 kilograms in total. OC Saha stated that the estimated black market value of the seized cannabis is around Rs 4 crore. The driver, Awadhesh Kumar (42), son of the late Ashok Kumar, and co-driver Pramod Kumar (59), son of the late Ram Bharose, both residents of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, were taken into custody.
A case will be filed against them under the NDPS Act, and further investigation will continue, said OC Saha. The accused will be produced before the district court tomorrow. Upon receiving the news of the seizure, North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, SDPO B. Zorine Puiya, and DCM Jinius Debbarma rushed to the scene. The contraband was seized in front of the officials and other witnesses.
