Manipur, May 12: A son of the Northeast has fallen in the line of duty. BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham from Manipur lost his life after sustaining fatal injuries during cross-border firing along the R S Pura sector of Jammu on May 10. His martyrdom on May 11 has triggered an outpouring of national grief.
The young soldier from Yairipok Yambem village was not just a jawan, but a beacon of courage representing the fierce commitment of Manipuri youth to serve the motherland.


His sacrifice has become a symbol of bravery for the entire region. Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed his condolences on X, writing, “Deeply saddened by the martyrdom of BSF Braveheart Constable (GD) Deepak Chingakham, who sustained fatal injuries during cross-border firing from Pakistan in the R S Pura sector and laid down his life in the line of duty.” He added, “He was a proud son of Manipur, and as a Manipuri-Meitei, his courage and devotion to the nation reflect the unwavering commitment of our people to protect and serve.” Singh also affirmed that the state would extend all possible support to the bereaved family and that Deepak’s sacrifice would be remembered with honour and pride.
Announcing the martyrdom, BSF Jammu’s official X handle posted, “We salute the supreme sacrifice made by BSF braveheart Constable(GD) Deepak Chingakham in the service of the nation; he sustained fatal injuries during cross-border firing along the International Boundary in R S Pura area, District Jammu on 10 May 2025, and attained martyrdom on 11 May 2025.”
The post further stated that Director General BSF and all ranks express their deepest condolences to the constable’s family. Sanajaoba Leishemba, the titular Maharaja of Manipur and Rajya Sabha MP, also took to social media to pay his respects. “Salute supreme sacrifice made by BSF Braveheart Jawan Deepak Chingakham of Yairipok Yambem, Manipur in the service of the nation,” he wrote, joining fellow leaders in mourning the fallen soldier.
Officials have confirmed that the wreath-laying ceremony, with full military honours, will be held at the BSF Frontier Headquarters in Paloura, Jammu.
