Agartala, March 8: The Tripura State Women’s Commission celebrated International Women’s Day today by organizing a felicitation ceremony at its office premises. The event honored 10 women from different professions for their contributions to society. Additionally, two former chairpersons and two former vice-chairpersons of the commission were recognized for their role in raising awareness about women’s rights.
Speaking as the chief guest, Chairperson Jharna Debbarma highlighted that this year’s International Women’s Day theme is ‘Preventing Child Marriage.’ She announced that the commission will undertake a seven-day-long awareness campaign to address this issue. She emphasized the importance of respecting women’s rights, stating that ensuring their dignity and safety will lead to the overall progress of society, the state, and the nation.
The event began with a welcome speech by Madhab Pal, Member Secretary of the State Women’s Commission. Also present were Vice Chairperson Madhumita Chowdhury, commission members, and legal officer Debasmita Chakraborty.
As part of the felicitation, brick kiln worker Geeta Chauhan, domestic worker Rekha Sarkar, bamboo craft artist Rupali Sarkar, auto driver Rupa Sutradhar, tailor Mansa Roy, fish vendor Kalpana Bhaumik, poultry farm & biogas plant operator Sabita Sinha, tailor Bobby Pal Saha, vegetable vendor Karuna Das, and dairy farmer Sofia Khatun were honored. Each was presented with a shawl and a commemorative memento by the chairperson and other dignitaries.
The Women’s Commission aims to continue its efforts to empower women and raise awareness about their rights through various initiatives across the state.
