Aizawl, February 25, 2025: A legal awareness programme on women’s rights, health, and nutrition was organized today in Kawnpui by the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW) in collaboration with the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Thingdawl. CDPO Thingdawl, Pu C. Vanlalzapa, chaired the session, where Pi C. Zodinpuii, Chairperson of the Mizoram State Commission for Women, spoke about the Commission’s initiatives across different districts of Mizoram. She emphasized the importance of the Commission’s role in addressing women’s challenges and ensuring their legal protection under various laws, particularly the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
Legal expert Pu T. Lalnunsiama, a member of the MSCW Legal Cell, elaborated on various laws concerning women’s rights and protection. Meanwhile, Pi Zonunpari Sailo, MSCW Member Secretary, provided guidance on women’s health, nutrition, and the importance of a balanced diet. Speakers highlighted that violence and hardships faced by women are not limited to Mizoram but are prevalent in different parts of India. Legal measures are being taken to provide justice and support for women in distress. It was emphasized that a woman’s dignity should be protected in marriage and that forced dependence on a husband for financial security can sometimes lead to exploitation.
Legal provisions exist to support women who suffer from financial neglect or domestic abuse. The session also discussed how marriage should not be a tool to undermine women’s autonomy. Instead, laws should be utilized to ensure gender equality in relationships. Furthermore, it was acknowledged that many women continue to suffer due to a lack of awareness about their rights, and empowerment through legal knowledge is crucial.
The event was attended by representatives from NGOs, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Anganwadi workers, and women Village Council (VC) members.
