Tripura 22 Feb, 2025: The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has benefitted citizens both directly and indirectly across the country. Since the financial year 2017-18, GST collection in Tripura has been consistently increasing, reaching over ₹510 crore in 2023-24. Additionally, the Integrated GST settlement has crossed ₹1,000 crore. This achievement has been made possible through effective government policies, efficient administration, and technological advancements, said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
Speaking at the inauguration of a GST awareness campaign organized by the Taxation Department of the state government at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister emphasized the state’s efforts to enhance revenue while ensuring a fair and efficient taxation system. As part of these initiatives, the Tripura Road Development Cess was introduced in August 2018, significantly contributing to the state’s revenue growth. The cess collection increased from ₹27.75 crore in 2018-19 to ₹374.52 crore in 2023-24. Additionally, the Tripura Electricity Duty was introduced in October 2019.
Strengthening the Tax System with AI and Digital Tools
The Chief Minister highlighted the use of AI-based analytics tools in detecting GST fraud, making identification of fraudulent activities easier. The Tax Intelligence Unit is now actively monitoring suspicious activities such as fake registrations and circular trading. To further strengthen tax administration, new positions such as Assistant Commissioner of Taxes, Statistical Officer, and Programmer have been created.
He also stated that the establishment of a GST Knowledge Centre will simplify tax filing for taxpayers. Additionally, the introduction of chatbot services will benefit taxpayers, officials, and the general public. While initial challenges, including delays in tax payments, arose following the implementation of GST, and economic activities were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, effective administrative measures led to an increase in the Tripura Road Development Cess rate, resulting in a 58% rise in cess revenue.
Several reforms have also been undertaken to strengthen the state’s excise revenue system, including the First Point Taxation System and e-Excise Portal. Efforts are underway to enhance digital awareness among taxpayers and strengthen the Tax Intelligence Unit to prevent tax evasion.
Tripura Witnesses a Rise in Tax Collection
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, speaking at the event, noted that GST implementation has brought transparency to the taxation system and has led to increased tax revenue. In 2023-24, the state collected over ₹3,000 crore in taxes from various sources. The government’s close collaboration with taxpayers has significantly contributed to this revenue growth. Several initiatives, including the GST Knowledge Centre, Mission Zero Fake Registration, and Tax Sathi Portal, have been introduced to facilitate taxpayers and streamline the tax system.
