Agartala, 20 Feb, 2025: A woman police constable, identified as Suniti Sarkar, allegedly died by suicide due to fear of police action over a loan-related issue. Suniti Sarkar was serving at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station.
According to her family, she had taken a loan from a bank to construct a two-storied house in ONGC Netaji Nagar, under Amtali police station. However, she struggled to repay the loan on time, leading to mounting pressure from the bank. The bank reportedly threatened her with police action and arrest if she failed to make the payments.
Suniti Sarkar confided in her husband, Debdulal Sarkar, and other relatives about the pressure she was facing. Despite their reassurances, she remained distressed. On Wednesday, while on duty at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station, she received information that she would be arrested if she returned home. This news allegedly triggered immense fear and anxiety in her.
The next morning, Thursday, Suniti returned home from work and, in the absence of family members, took her own life by hanging herself in her room. Her husband, Debdulal Sarkar, discovered her body hanging and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbors.
Police from Amtali station, led by Sub-Inspector Hiren Debbarma, along with the Deputy Collector Magistrate, rushed to the scene. Her body was recovered and sent for post-mortem at Hapania Medical College Hospital.
Amtali police have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation. The 40-year-old deceased leaves behind her husband, son, and mother-in-law. The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire locality.
