Watershed Yatra promoting water conservation and harvesting flagged off by DC Shopian; plantation drive initiated to ensure environmental sustainability.
SHABD,Srinagar, February 20: Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, flagged off the Watershed Yatra from the Mini Secretariat Shopian today, emphasizing the importance of water conservation and sustainable environmental practices. He also initiated a plantation drive in the campus to promote ecological balance.
The Yatra focuses on community participation in water conservation and harvesting efforts. It is funded by the Department of Land Resources and implemented by the Rural Development Department under WDC-PMKSY 2.0. Various projects under the scheme include water harvesting tanks, irrigation channels, dykes, soil protection bunds, ponds, and soakage pits.
Additionally, livelihood projects have been integrated to enhance farmers’ income. The initiative follows three stages: planning, execution, and evaluation, in coordination with horticulture, agriculture, and other departments. The scheme has been implemented in various blocks of Shopian, covering thousands of acres of land. Presently, it is being executed in Chitragam and Imam Sahib blocks.
Institutions such as SLNA, DWCs, and PRIs play a crucial role in the scheme’s execution, benefiting agricultural and allied communities significantly. The event was attended by ADDC Dr. Nasir Ahmad Lone, ACD Manzoor Ahmad, and other officers and officials.
