Agartala 10 Jan, 2025: The Tripura Legislative Assembly today paid tribute to former Prime Minister and eminent economist Dr. Manmohan Singh, following his passing. The session began with Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen reading the condolence motion, after which all members stood in silence for two minutes to honor the departed leader.
In the condolence motion, Speaker Sen expressed profound grief over the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, stating that the former Prime Minister and economist passed away on December 26, 2024, at 9:51 PM while undergoing treatment at AIIMS in New Delhi. He was 92 years old and had been suffering from age-related ailments for an extended period.
Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in the village of Gah in Punjab Province (then undivided India). After Partition, his family migrated to India. Known for his exceptional intellect, he completed his undergraduate degree from Punjab University in 1952 and a postgraduate degree in 1954. Later, he pursued higher education abroad, earning a degree in Economics from Cambridge University in 1957 and a DPhil from Oxford University in 1962.
Speaker Sen highlighted Dr. Manmohan Singh illustrious career, which began at the United Nations in 1966. Upon returning to India in 1969, he joined the Delhi School of Economics as a professor of economics. In 1972, he became the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, later serving as Finance Secretary in 1976 and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1985, he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, playing a pivotal role in stabilizing the nation’s financial systems.
As India’s Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, Dr. Manmohan Singh spearheaded economic liberalization and reforms, transforming the country’s economic landscape. From 2004 to 2014, he served as India’s Prime Minister, during which India achieved economic stability, technological progress, poverty reduction, and significant diplomatic success. His prudent leadership during the 2008 global economic crisis helped India avoid a major financial setback.
Speaker Sen praised Dr. Manmohan Singh as a humble, honest, and visionary economist and statesman. His demise marks the loss of an exceptional talent for the nation. He is survived by his wife, Smt. Gursharan Kaur, three daughters, and countless admirers. The Tripura Assembly conveyed heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and paid homage to the late leader.
