Agartala 23 Dec, 2024: Special emphasis has been placed on public awareness to prevent road accidents in the state. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stated that accidents and fatalities can be reduced through caution and public awareness. He highlighted various awareness initiatives undertaken at both central and state levels for road safety. The minister spoke during the 15th meeting of the State Road Safety Council, held at the Secretariat today. Notably, the Transport Minister serves as the Chairman of the Council, which consists of 11 members.
During the meeting, the Transport Minister emphasized that the government has been implementing various awareness programs to reduce road accidents and fatalities. Measures such as the use of advanced equipment, interceptor vehicles, and enhanced traffic management are being prioritized. He mentioned the provision of a Good Samaritan Award of ₹5,000 to encourage citizens to assist accident victims. Additionally, road safety awareness programs on traffic rules, consumer safety, and the ill effects of drug abuse will soon be conducted in 25 colleges across the state, in collaboration with the Transport, Food, and Home Departments.
The meeting was attended by Kiran Gitte (Secretary, Public Works Department), C.K. Jamatia (Secretary, Transport Department), DIG Manchak Ippar, Traffic Police Superintendent Manik Das, and other senior officials from various departments, including the Transport Department.

Subrata Chowdhury, Additional Secretary of the Transport Department, presented the department’s accomplishments and future initiatives. He highlighted a 13% reduction in road accident fatalities in 2024 compared to 2023, surpassing the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee’s directive of reducing fatalities by 10% annually.
2. District-Level Committees:
District Road Safety Committees are required to hold bi-monthly meetings to implement preventive measures.
3. Dedicated Road Safety Wing:
The state will establish a dedicated Road Safety Wing to address accident-prone areas and “black spots.”
4. Road Safety Month:
January will be observed as Road Safety Month, with various campaigns planned.
5. Vehicle Scrapping Policy:
The Tripura Vehicle Scrapping Policy-2024 has been introduced to promote sustainable road safety practices.
6. Awareness Programs:
Anti-Drug Addiction and Road Safety Committees will be formed in educational institutions to enhance awareness from the school to university level.
7. Technological Advancements:
The eDAR (Electronic Detailed Accident Report) system will be introduced soon for technical monitoring of road accidents.
8. Pedestrian Safety:
Improved footpaths and preventive measures at accident-prone areas and black spots were discussed.
