Khowai 20 December, 2024: Yesterday, Acting on a tip-off, Khowai police detained six Bangladeshi nationals, suspected to be Rohingyas, from a guest house in the city on Thursday night. Fake Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and PAN cards were recovered from them.
Khowai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Subir Malakar stated that the arrests were made at a guest house in the Hospital Chowmuhani area. Those detained include Mohammad Kabir (37), Tania Begum (35), Ayesha Khatun (60), Md. Momin (23), Mohammad Sakib (6), and Sahida (5). Among them are two children.
During interrogation, the detainees revealed that they are residents of Sirajpur, under Majda police station in Feni, Bangladesh. They confessed to entering India illegally and were on their way to Bangladesh via Khowai after traveling from Delhi. However, they were unable to cross back into Bangladesh due to strict border surveillance.
Police suspect that the six individuals might be Rohingyas who had previously entered India from Bangladesh. In recent times, thousands of Rohingyas have sought refuge in Bangladesh’s Chittagong area after being displaced by military operations in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The arrested individuals are believed to have crossed over from Bangladesh into India a few days ago.
Police have filed multiple charges against the detainees, and further investigations are underway.
