Agartala, December 11, 2024: Drama is the mirror of society and should raise social awareness, said Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy while inaugurating the State-Level Drama Festival 2024 at Rabindra Satabarshiki Hall. He emphasized the need for plays to address relevant social issues, such as child marriage, drug addiction, and elder abandonment, to engage the audience and create social movements beyond administrative efforts. He also highlighted the importance of street plays to connect with the masses and urged dramatists to craft performances that resonate with contemporary needs to capture audience interest.
Presiding over the event, Vice Chairman of the State Cultural Advisory Committee Subrata Chakraborty stressed the historical roots of Tripura’s theater tradition and its role in guiding society. Senior dramatist Manik Dutta emphasized the importance of cultural practice in shaping virtuous individuals, while NSD Regional Director Biplab Barakakti wished the festival success.
The 15-day festival, featuring 34 drama troupes and over 400 artists, will run until December 25. Performances include two plays on weekdays and three on weekends. Director of Information & Cultural Affairs, Bimbisara Bhattacharya, encouraged public participation and highlighted the government’s efforts to promote local talent. The opening ceremony featured a cultural performance by artists from Asha Sangeet Kala Kendra.
