Agartala: Yesterday, GBP Hospital has recently achieved remarkable success in providing advanced healthcare services, leading to a significant reduction in patient referrals to facilities outside the state. Addressing a press conference today at GBP Hospital, Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty shared these achievements and emphasized the growing trust in the hospital’s capabilities.
Dr. Chakraborty highlighted that the hospital’s enhanced services, particularly in neurology and neurosurgery, have instilled confidence among patients.
Assistant Professor of Neurology, Dr. Abir Lal Nath, elaborated on the developments in the neurology department over the past 18 months, including the establishment of a 10-bed male inpatient ward and a 10-bed female inpatient ward. The department now offers advanced diagnostic tests such as Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV), Electromyography (EMG), Repetitive Nerve Stimulation Test (RNST) for Myasthenia Gravis, Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) for optic nerve evaluation, and Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) for brain-related conditions.
Since May 31, 2023, the neurology department has performed approximately 30 coiling procedures, 300 DSA tests, and 20 brain stenting procedures under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, completely free of cost. Dr. Nath emphasized that treatments like coiling, stenting, and Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), which would otherwise cost lakhs in private hospitals, are now available at GBP Hospital at no expense to patients.
Sharing a case study, Dr. Nath recounted how an 18-year-old woman, Priya Das, was saved through timely coiling after being diagnosed with an aneurysm, a condition where brain blood vessels swell and risk rupture. He stressed the importance of early diagnosis and consulting specialists promptly. Another case involved a 30-year smoker, Dilip Karmakar, who underwent emergency brain stenting after one of his arteries was completely blocked.
Highlighting the advancements in neurosurgery, Head of the Department Dr. Sidda Reddy stated that over 1,700 major surgeries, including spinal procedures, have been conducted since March 2019. He added that plans are underway to introduce additional services in the next three years, further reducing the need for patient referrals outside the state.
Dr. Chakraborty also announced that ICU services would soon be expanded, with six additional beds in the medicine ICU and eight more beds to be added by December, bringing the total to 16. He revealed plans to expand the gynecology, obstetrics, and medicine departments, potentially constructing a new block to meet increasing patient demands.
The press conference was attended by Dr. Shankar Chakraborty (Medical Superintendent), Dr. Abir Lal Nath (Assistant Professor, Neurology), Dr. Sidda Reddy (Head, Neurosurgery), Dr. Kanak Chowdhury (Deputy Medical Superintendent), and Dr. Abhijit Sarkar (Deputy Medical Superintendent).
