Date: November 9, 2024: In a significant incident on the Northeast Frontier Railway, a freight train derailed on the Lumding-Badarpur section, damaging nearly 4-5 kilometers of railway track. This derailment has halted the supply of essential commodities, including petroleum products, from other states into the region via rail. Railway authorities have initiated extensive repairs, with restoration work being carried out at a rapid pace. The authorities expect to resume goods transportation services on this line by November 13, 2024.
In response to the disruption, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is currently transporting petrol and diesel by road tankers from its depots in Guwahati, Betkuchi, Lamding, and Silchar in Assam.
However, due to limited stock at the IOCL depot in Dharmanagar and various sub-divisional petrol pumps across the state, the government has decided to implement temporary petrol rationing starting November 10, 2024.
A press release from the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs urged citizens not to panic or resort to excessive petrol purchases. The rationing system will remain in effect until rail transportation of petroleum products resumes. Authorities are appealing to the public to adhere to the rationing measures to ensure fair distribution during this period.
This temporary rationing aims to maintain a steady supply of petrol until normal railway operations are restored.
