Wild Elephant Terror Strikes Teliamura: Panic Grips Town
Teliamura, Oct. 16, 2024: A wild tusker entered Teliamura town late last night, creating panic among residents. The elephant was first spotted in Netaji Nagar around 1:30 AM, causing chaos as people fled in fear. The town, accustomed to seeing domesticated elephants, was unprepared for the sudden appearance of a wild one.
The incident followed the second day of the “Mayer Gomon” festival, which had drawn thousands to the town’s center for festivities. As late-night programs continued in local clubs, including Netaji Smriti Sangha, the elephant’s unexpected arrival disrupted celebrations. Panic spread as the tusker made its way from Loknath Temple to the dried fish market, crossing the Howai River.
Forest department officials rushed to the scene, managing to chase the elephant toward Kabi Nazrul Vidyabhavan. It later retreated to the Kunjamura area, where it was last reported.
For over three decades, villages surrounding Teliamura, such as Chakmaghat, DM Colony, and Krishnapur, have faced frequent wild elephant invasions, damaging crops and property. However, this is one of the rare instances where a tusker has entered the heart of Teliamura town. Social media lit up this morning as residents shared their fear and concern, with many questioning the long-term effectiveness of forest department strategies to keep elephants out of human settlements.
Wild elephants are known for their strong memory, often returning to familiar routes. This habitual movement raises further concerns for Teliamura residents, as the town now joins the list of areas vulnerable to elephant attacks.
