Khowai 1 March, 2025: A student from an underprivileged family has been forced to lose a year due to an alleged mismanagement by his school. On Friday, the CBSE-conducted Secondary Examination for Hindi was held. Bapan Deb, a student of Derozio Mission School in the Laltilla area under Ramchandraghat constituency, went to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya to appear for his examination like other students.
However, upon reaching the exam hall, he was shocked to learn that the test was for the Hindi subject despite being a Bengali-medium student. Shocked and devastated, Bapan rushed home and informed his family, breaking down in tears. His impoverished parents were equally shattered upon learning that their only son had missed his examination due to an alleged registration error. According to Bapan’s mother, five months ago, they had admitted him to the prestigious private school, Derozio Mission, in Khowai’s Jambura area, by somehow managing to pay ₹60,000.
Bapan had never studied Hindi as a subject he was enrolled in the Bengali stream. However, on the day of the exam, he was not allowed to appear for his actual subject due to an apparent registration error listing Hindi instead of Bengali. Desperate for answers, Bapan and his family rushed to Derozio Mission School, located 8 km away in Khowai town, but the school authorities outright denied any responsibility. The management claimed that Bapan’s registration had been done under the Hindi subject and that the verification process had been completed earlier. They refused to acknowledge any mistake on their part.
The grieving family questioned why the school admitted their son midway through the session, taking a hefty fee, only to jeopardize his future. This is not the first time that allegations have surfaced against the school for compromising students’ academic careers for money. The incident has left the education community in shock, with many calling for accountability from the school authorities.
