Unakoti District: In a remarkable display of dedication, healthcare workers ensured the successful delivery of a baby girl under challenging circumstances in the remote village of Samaruchhara, under Jamtail Bari Ayushman Arogya Mandir in Unakoti district.
On December 3, a 22-year-old pregnant woman from Samaruchhara experienced labor pains. Her family promptly contacted local healthcare workers, who rushed to her home to conduct an initial examination. Recognizing the urgency, they advised immediate hospital care. However, the area’s difficult terrain made it impossible for an ambulance or other vehicles to reach the woman’s house.
Determined to provide assistance, the healthcare workers, with the help of the family, crafted a makeshift stretcher using bamboo and cloth. They carried the woman nearly two kilometers through rugged paths to reach a motorable road. From there, they arranged a vehicle to transport her to the Unakoti District Hospital.
The woman had been regularly undergoing antenatal check-ups at the Nishiranjan Nandita Memorial Primary Health Center, enabling hospital staff to access her medical records swiftly. Upon arrival, she was admitted, and at 2:35 PM, Nursing Officer Jaba Debbarma, with assistance from other healthcare workers, successfully facilitated the normal delivery of a healthy baby girl. This was the woman’s second child.
Both the mother and newborn are in good health and are currently receiving free medication and other necessary care at the hospital. The healthcare staff also educated the family on proper newborn care and postnatal responsibilities.
The healthcare team involved included MPWs Lien Lalbul Halam and Firthinirs Halam, ASHA Facilitator Anupa Malakar, and ASHA worker Hemlata Debbarma. Their efforts were supported by Block Program Manager Alokesh Nandi and Community Health Officer Debashree Deb of Jamtail Bari Ayushman Arogya Mandir.
The woman’s family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare workers for their exemplary service. The Department of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine shared this inspiring story through a press release.
